Dunster and its surrounding area have many events throughout the year, and perhaps the most well known is Dunster By Candlelight, held on the first Friday and Saturday of December every year. The whole village is transformed into a magical candlelit vista complete with lantern processions, live music, street entertainers, stalls and a multitude of places to get piping hot food and a warming glass or two of mulled wine – just what’s needed on a winter night! The event is incredibly popular, often with attendances of over 7,000 visitors each night so if you’re hoping to come and stay in the village and enjoy this fabulous weekend, make sure you book your accommodation well in advance. The Priory Church of St. George, Dunster is always worthy of a visit. It’s over 500 years old (some parts date back to the 12th century) and has the longest carved rood screen in England. It’s steeped in history and was both the parish church, and linked to the 11th century Dunster Benedictine priory. However, this shared arrangement caused problems and to resolve this, the rood screen was built to divide the church in two, and keep the parishioners and monks apart.
Some of the annual events held at the church include a spectacular flower show, and frequent choral and musical festivals. Please take a look at their events page here.
